What Olympiad Actually Involves
School olympiads are competitive examinations sat alongside the regular curriculum. They test reasoning and application rather than recall, which is why strong board marks do not automatically translate into strong olympiad results.

How It Is Structured
- SOF olympiads such as IMO (mathematics), NSO (science), IEO (English) and NCO (computers) run in two levels, with Level 2 open to Level 1 qualifiers.
- The HBCSE pathway runs in stages, progressing from a national-level examination through training camps to international team selection.
- Level 1 papers are usually sat at the student's own school.
What the Syllabus Covers
- Syllabus largely follows the student's school curriculum for their class
- Papers add a higher-order thinking or achievers section that goes beyond the textbook
- Emphasis falls on multi-step reasoning, pattern recognition and applying a concept in an unfamiliar setting
Worth Knowing Before You Start
- Olympiad preparation is not extra coverage of the school syllabus. A student who scores well in school can still find the reasoning sections difficult, because the questions are built to be unfamiliar.
- The two pathways are different in kind: SOF olympiads are school-registered and broad, while the HBCSE route is a selection process for international competition.
